Sampling information and instructions

Instructions for sample taking/sending for homeowners

A chain of custody (coc) must be completed for all samples submitted to APASI Lab.

Asbestos analysis:

  • Be sure to protect yourself by wearing gloves, respirator, mask, or at least a dampened towel around your mouth and nose area.
  • Remove a small portion of the material (2" x 2") to be tested and place it in a zip lock bag.  If taking more than one sample be sure to label the bag and record this information on the coc.
  • Place that bag(s) in another zip lock bag with the completed coc.
  • Wash clothes, hands and exposed skin thoroughly after completing sample removal.

Mold Analysis:

For a full assessment of the air quality in your home a licensed consultant is recommended.  Contact our office for references of consultants in your area.  However, as a homeowner you can take a sample of an area of concern and send it to us for analysis.

  • Bulk Material

Simply remove a small portion of the affected area and place it in a zip lock baggy. If taking more than one sample be sure to label the bag and record this information on the coc.

  • Tape Lift

In areas where removal of material is not prudent, a sample of the affected area can be taken using clear cellophane tap e (not opaque, magic disappearing tape).  Simply take the clear cellophane tape and lightly press it against the affected area.  Then stick the tape to the inside of a zip lock baggy. DO NOT double and stick the tape to its self. Multiple samples should be place in separate baggies and each given a label and record this infomation on the coc.
